The piano is available for your Mac Dashboard. The Mac dashboard piano has been on Apple.com top 50 widgets for over a year now. You can also locate the piano on sites like Widgipedia, Google Gadgets, WidgetBox, ClearSpring and on hundreds of download websites. The piano gets played over 100,000 times every week. It also gets downloaded and installed over 5,000 times a week on PC and even more on Mac. The cool thing about the piano is that you can play real songs! So many of the Button Beats fans have made big contributions to the song selection. The fans/users are very appreciative and have been very nice with compliments about the website and to each others song contributions. Some comments have been aggressive but at the same time helpful in providing feedback.

I started the piano in 2007. I would read flash CS3 tutorials on downtime, or on the train. After a few months of studying AS3 (action script 3) I got started on the piano as cool project to help me learn AS3. I made the first version of the piano and uploaded it to the web. I got alot of responses that the idea was grood but the execution of the idea was lacking. At the time, the piano did not have the keyboard control option. So it was just a simple out of tune piano that was controlled by mouse only. I researched how to play a sound when a key is pressed and set all the keys to play a piano note when pressed. I was happy and proud with what I had created at the time. Many people did not like that it was out of tune. I often got comments like "fix it you bum". After getting enough comments to motivate me to get it in tune I went ahead and recorded piano samples directly from a piano that was in tune. I uploaded the new version of the piano to the web and no longer received the belittling comments about the piano being out of tune. About a year passed in the time I started the piano till the day I uploaded the latest version that was in tune and keyboard controlled. I then converted the first real world song (Jingle Bells) into letters for people to play on the piano. I posted Jingle bells on the website and people liked it alot. When people noticed you can write real songs for the piano they began sending them in. Ever since then, fans / users of the site have been contributing songs every week. I couldnt be happier with the response we are getting on the piano. It gets played in almost every country in the world, every month! I get emails in many different languages asking questions / commenting about the piano. I get the emails forwaded to my cell phone's text messages. So at random times of day I get texts in all different languages. Its pretty interesting. I usually translate the message using Google Translate. I try to respond to people in their own language but im not sure how good Google Translate gets the point across.

I heard the piano was published in a French computer magazine called Micro Hebdo. I called the company to send me a copy of the magazine, they agreed to send but never did. I dont remember what month it was that it had been published. I think it was late 2008.

Fast forward - It is now 2010! Every 7 seconds someone starts up the piano and once every couple minutes someone new downloads and installs the piano. All in all, it was a pleasure to make the piano and even more of a pleasure that so many people enjoy it.
